A great big hello from Vilonia! The past 40 hours or so have been interesting. Some of you have stayed current with my travel home via Facebook or e-mail, but for those who haven't I will share a bit of the story.

I left the hotel in Bucharest at 5:30 (Romania time) on Monday morning. My itinerary included a 2-hour flight to Prague, a 2-hour layover, a 10-hour flight to Atlanta, and then on home to Arkansas. I was scheduled to arrive home at 5:30 p.m. (Arkansas time).

The first leg of the journey went flawlessly. However, once in Prague I found that the ash cloud created by the Icelandic volcano was creating tremendous havoc with European travel. We ended up being delayed by 6.5 hours in Prague. In my travel-experienced opinion, Delta handled it graciously. After we had checked into the gate and gone through security, the captain came out and gave us a good explanation of what was causing the delay and asked for understanding.

If you don't mind indulging me, I want to share an interesting story with you. There were several hundred people at the gate, many of whom at this point were really beginning to grumble and complain. I asked a nice lady from Kansas City if I could borrow a convertor (mine was in my checked luggage) and I fired up the laptop. The airport in Prague offers free Wi-Fi. So, I put my laptop on the counter at the service desk and asked if anyone would like to send an e-mail to their destination. People were thrilled! Many of them began to visit with one another and share their stories. About 20 or 25 of them sent e-mails. For example, one lady from Cleveland desperately needed to communicate with the caregiver for her 93-year-old mother. She gave me a big hug with tears in her eyes.

One guy from Detroit starting checking the news and updating everyone. He would shout, "Aw, Lena Horne passed away!" Then he would shout out the score from a ballgame. It was so cool! The biggest advantage was that time seemed to fly! One very valuable lesson learned! I guess when life gives you lemons, you really can make lemondae.

Needless to say, I arrived in Atlanta well after the last plane had departed for Little Rock. Thanks to the Hampton Inn, I was able to get a good night's rest and completed my journey this morning (Tuesday). It was sure nice to see Lisa at the airport! It was the most beautiful sight I had seen all week, as a matter of fact!

I want to say how much I appreciate your prayers and e-mails. It is really difficult to make one of these trips by yourself. You've heard Dad and I say that before. But, thanks to the Internet, e-mail, and Facebook the world is getting smaller all the time.

I want to close with two requests:

First, please continue to pray for the fine Christians of Romania. It was a true honor for me to spend the past week with them. They are an inspiration to me. Many of them need our prayers as they struggle in difficult situations. The 2011 Romanian Christian Family Reunion (new name for the retreat) will be special!

Second, I would like for you to remember a very special young lady who begins a mission effort of her own next week. Hannah Henderson is the daughter of one of my fellow elders at the Vilonia church. She leaves early next week for Tanzania on a medical mission. Her parents, Kenny and Karen, are very close friends to us. Hannah and our Kyndall grew up together and are very close, as well. Hannah is traveling with a group from Harding University where she is a nursing student. I empathized with her Dad as we talked today. I suppose the good news is that she is staying in a place with good security (armed guards, etc.). The bad news: she is in a place where that level of security is needed! So, please keep her in your prayers as she leaves for Africa.

Greetings from Bucharest! I've made a slight change in my travel plans and have returned to Bucharest a day earlier than planned. My original itinerary included a delayed return because I could not get a flight from Cluj to Bucharest today (Sunday). So, I was planning to kill a day on Monday and fly to Bucharest and then return home on Tuesday.

As fate would have it, two couples (one from Bucharest and one from Pitesti) stayed in Cluj over Saturday night and worshipped with us this morning. They also had just enough room for me to hitch a ride back with them! These four young Christians are very special people. Andi Loghin grew up in Pitesti and has been a Christian since 1996. He has worked with us for years, translating in Bible studies and worship services. He is now married and has a 9-month old boy. This week gave me a chance to get to know his sweet wife, Alina, much better. She is a fine young lady.

Marius and Bianca Motreanu were with us on the journey back to Pitesti. I had the honor of officiating at their wedding last July. Bianca grew up in the church at Cluj and worked with us in 2007 when we first began working with the church there. They are such a happy young couple and so faithful in their service to God.

We had a lot of laughs as we fondly remembered some of our past work in Romania. Of course, it was difficult to say "so long" to the Christians in Cluj, especially Claudiu and Anca. I am so thankful for their work with the Cluj congregation.

This will be my last post from Europe. Lord willing, I will be home in about 27 hours from now. I want to close by saying how proud I am to know so many brothers and sisters in Christ from this country. They are special people. Most of them are first-generation Christians. They face challenges that many American Christians have never faced. Please pray for them as they labor for the Master in difficult circumstances.

Retreat Day 3: Saturday - 8 May 2010

Whew! It is now 11:30 p.m. here in Cluj. The day is just about over and it began very early for me.

I arose at 5:50 a.m. One of the joys of age, I suppose, is the inability to sleep later than sunrise. After being cloudy and rainy for most of Friday, it was stunningly beautiful today. After showering and dressing, I walked around the grounds of the camp all by myself for a good hour. I even took a good long while at whittling on a stick! I haven't done that in decades! It was very refreshing and reminded me of the need to slow down occasionally.

Brother Vasile Iuhos of Oradea spoke to us this morning on the subject "He who is living by faith does not neglect the Holy Spirit." Thanks, Vasi, for a job very well done!

Following a bit of fellowship time and a few parting goodbyes to those who had to leave early, we closed the retreat with an inspirational period of discussion led by Brother Andi Matei of Timisoara on the subject "He who is living by faith is sure of his salvation." He led us is a very open way that encouraged a great deal of discussion. I'm not sure how long we would have gone had we not been forced to stop by obligations. Thanks Andi!

I closed the retreat with a few thoughts and Claudiu reading scripture. We have a new name for this retreat: the Romanian Christian Family Reunion! When I made that suggestion it was very warmly received. So, next May we hope to host the fourth installment of this period of Christian family fellowship. Lord willing, we will see everyone back and many more in attendance.

I want to thank two congregations at home who helped make this week possible. The Levy congregation in North Little Rock and the Vilonia congregation financed the retreat and my travel here. I wish that the Christians in those places could know the impact of their help.

Thanks to all of the Romanians who worked hard to make this Family Reunion possible. I will post some pictures from today in another entry. The last entry will be group photos from the members of each congregation.

I ask that you pray for all those who will be traveling home from the event, including myself.

Retreat Day 2: Friday - 7 May 2010

Wow! What a full day! I had forgotten how busy, long, tiring, and rewarding this day - our "full day" at the retreat - could be. But, what a blessing!

We opened the day with breakfast, served by three fantastic ladies. Two are from Craiova and one from Oradea. They have the true servant's heart and we deeply appreciate them.

Three lessons were delivered today. Brother Ion Fratostiteanu from Craiova spoke on the topic of "He who is living in faith walks by faith and n0t through seeing and feeling." Thanks Ion for a great lesson.

We enjoyed a period of open discussion following his lesson. Sister Lavinia Cook of Bucharest led the ladies discussion and I facilitated the men's session. We focused on practical lessons regarding the testing of our faith. Brother Marius Motreanu of Pitesti delivered a lesson entitled "He who is living in faith is growing spiritually." Thanks Marius for a fine lesson!

We were "blessed" with rain during the retreat, but thankfully it broke long enough for everyone to enjoy some free time in the afternoon. Brother Claudiu Murtaza of Cluj closed the lessons for the day with the subject "He who is living in faith hates sin." I thank God for Claudiu and appreciate his lesson!

We closed the day around a campfire that started at 10:00. Listening to 50-plus voices praise God in the darkness, their voices piercing the cold night air, was enough to bring chills and tears to the eyes of this fellow. It really was a fantastic way to finish the day.

Retreat Day 1: Thursday - 6 May 2010

This entry won't be posted until Saturday, but I'm recording it on Thursday evening. Fifty-two Christians have gathered in this beautiful mountain setting outside Cluj-Napoca. It is really difficult for me to describe just how peaceful things are in this place. The green mountains, fresh air, and crisp weather are just spectacular. God truly created an amazing world!

We enjoyed a dinner together, followed by some sporting activities. The group was divided into three camps - soccer, volleyball, and basketball. This old ballplayer took the court for probably the first time in 10 years and I am more acutely aware of the fact that 50 is VERY close. My mind still thought like the 17-year-old Vilonia Eagle, but my body just wouldn't do what I wanted it to do. I still received a few compliments regarding the remnants of my game. Christian brothers and sisters can be so kind at times!

Just past dark we made our way inside and heard an outstanding lesson by Brother Albert Cook of Bucharest on the subject "He who is living in faith cares about those who are dying and are not saved." He did a great job and we appreciate him. (By the way, it appears that our theme in 2011 will be focused on evangelism)

I will post a few pictures from Thursday in a separate entry.

A period of fellowship followed before us older folks hit the bed. The rest of the group followed several hours later. Thank you, God, for my brothers and sisters in Romania!

Day of Prep - 5 May 2010

Wednesday has been a very productive day as we prepare for the retreat in the mountains outside Cluj. We also enjoyed a period of mid-week Bible study with several of the Cluj brethren.

Claudiu and I spent the afternoon at the local Kaufland (supermarket) purchasing supplies for the 50-plus people. Neither of us has much experience with purchasing food supplies for a group that large. So, following some guidance from Claudiu's mother, Lidia, we proceeded to totally load down two shopping carts. It was quite an experience. We have a bit more shopping to do on Thursday before heading to the mountains.

We also had the opportunity to visit with a lady, Valeria, and eight of her nine children. (That's right - 9!) She and her husband, Daniel, received some bad news on Wednesday regarding his job. Please pray for this family as they struggle with some extremely trying times. We plan to study with them on Saturday afternoon.

I ask that you pray for the Christians from other cities in Romania who will be traveling here tomorrow.

I won't post again until we return to the city on Saturday afternoon. I'll provide an update of the Retreat and some pictures at that time.

Arrival - 4 May 2010

Greetings! A long, tiring journey is complete, but I have to admit that this was one of the more uneventful trips that I've ever made. My flights were on-time and without incident. This trip was a new route for me and included a stop in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic. The airport there is much smaller than the ones in Paris, Rome, and Amsterdam. As a matter of fact, it reminded me a lot of the airport at Little Rock. So, that was a nice surprise.

As I flew from Atlanta to Prague, I couldn't help but notice that I flew over numerous places where my ancestors lived. Most notably, I flew directly over Huntington, West Virginia where my Knight ancestors lived prior to relocating to Arkansas in about 1895. The same journey that took me 2 to 3 hours in an airplane must have taken them days via riverboat, wagon, or horseback.

The most beautiful sight of the journey was seen when we flew directly over Paris and I was able to look straight down at the Charles de Gaulle Airport, knowing that I did NOT have to stop there! That makes the trip that much more pleasurable! I should note that I have ancestors on my Knight side who emigrated from Paris, but they were the most notorious rascals of all my ancestors.

From the time I left the house in Vilonia until my arrival in Cluj, I traveled a little over 27 hours. While we're tempted to complain about long trips and the effort that they require, we are truly blessed. Here we are in the 21st Century with travel so convenient. The world - and the Lord's church - is a much smaller place due to these blessings. I'm thankful to live in such a time and to be numbered among Christians who care enough to send me to Romania to do the Lord's work.

I thank each of you for giving me this opportunity! I look forward to reporting on the Christian Retreat and the blessings that it will provide for the church in Romania.

Claudiu, Anca and I have been to dinner and now it is time for rest. At least as much as the jet-lag will allow. I appreciate the fact that you care enough to read these blog posts. I wish that each of you could be here with me to experience this week.

Bags Packed - 2 May 2010

I typically wait until the last minute to pack my bags. Things are no different as I prepare for this trip to Romania. I have found that if I wait until the last minute I am less prone to forget things. So, here I am 15 hours from departure and I'm packed!

I ask for your prayers as I am having a difficult time with leaving my family behind. The first time I went into the mission field, Brittany was 11 and Kyndall was 7. That was 13 years ago and they have left the nest; although it is just as hard to leave them behind now. Cassi and Derick were not even contemplated and Daniel and Erin had yet to come our way. I've found it very, very hard to say so long to them all over the past couple of days. Most difficult of all is leaving behind my best friend, Lisa. I already miss her and she is across the room! Dad and Mom were able to join us at worship service tonight and it was a bonus being able to see them before I leave.

The good news is that this is a short trip compared to some in the past. So, please pray for my family as I leave them behind. I am deeply grateful for them, especially for their patience with me as I spend so much time away from them doing this work in Romania.

Plans for this coming week are busy. Lord willing, I will arrive in Cluj on Tuesday - 6:30 p.m. Romanian time and 10:30 a.m. here at home. I hope to be able to spend some time with students in Cluj on Wednesday and we will begin preparing for the retreat. This will be the third year for this retreat for Christians. Young brothers and sisters in Christ from all over Romania will gather in Cluj for a period of fellowship, devotion, and study. It is a real bonus for me and I pray that it is beneficial to them. Among this group are some of the finest Christians in Romania and Eastern Europe. Among the attendees are preachers, teachers, translators, and servants. I ask that you pray for them as they travel to Cluj.

If the Lord wills, I shall post another entry on Tuesday evening following my arrival. I owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to so many who make this opportunity possible. Pray that my travel will be safe, efficient and according to schedule.

Almost Home - 27 Jul 2009

A big howdy-do from Cincinatti! I have another 30 minutes before boarding for my flight to Little Rock. Justin and I parted ways in Paris, as he flew home through Atlanta. Hopefully, he is in the air as I type and will arrive, as scheduled, at 4:30. I know that he is anxious to see his wife and young son. Justin did a tremendous job on his third trip into the mission field. He's becoming quite the experienced international traveler!

I am scheduled to arrive in Little Rock at 5:30 and will meet Lisa, Brittany and her kids for dinner before heading to Vilonia. Daniel has already gone to his hometown of Ashdown for his grandmother's funeral. Brittany and the kids will make their way toward there tonight. Please pray that they all have safe travels.

I'm thankful for this 22nd trip into the mission field. As grateful as I am for the opportunity, it is always good to be home and see my family. Lisa is so generous and understanding to have allowed me to do this work over the past 12 years. I'm thankful for her and my kids.

Unless you hear from me otherwise, this will be last post for today. I'll post more tomorrow and confirm that we arrived safely home.

Greetings from ancient old Bucharest!

Justin and I just arrived at our hotel here following a smooth flight from Cluj. We will overnight here and then begin our journey home with a trip to Paris. From there, JT will fly to Atlanta and Little Rock. I will connect through Cincinatti.

I just wanted to post to let you know that all is well. So far, so good - as they say.

Lord willing and if all goes as planned, we should both be in Arkansas in 32 hours!

Sunday Morning - 26 Jul 2009

Following a well-earned day off yesterday, we are getting ready for worship this morning followed by a trip to the airport! The group of workers enjoyed a trip to Sighisoara for their annual medieval festival on Saturday. It was quite an experience and one that I thoroughly enjoyed, even if the hot weather put a damper on things.

Sorina's husband, Dragos, met us there. He had brought along his brother, Rares Vintilla, and his friend, Ramona. Sorina and Costica left with Dragos and are safely back in Pitesti.

Justin and I will be with the Cluj church this morning.

Thanks to all of you back home who made our trip a reality. We are grateful for you.

I'd like to close by extending sympathy and asking for prayers on behalf of my son-in-law, Daniel. His grandmother, Vera Harless, passed away very unexpectedly on Friday night during her sleep. She was a faithful Christian for many years and we rejoice in that fact. But, we grieve for the Harless family. Please remember Daniel's father, Mark, and his sister, Rosemary. They lost their Dad on May 5 while I was on my last trip to Cluj and now have lost their Mom.

Keep us in your prayers as we travel.

Friday Evening - 24 Jul 2009

It's midnight here in Cluj and Justin and I are enjoying a Cubs game over the Internet. The game is being played on a sunny afternoon in Chicago and it is late at night here. I'll bet you can't tell that we're homesick!

This Friday was a beautiful day in many ways. We closed out the VBS with the last day of classes, lunch, and the graduation ceremony. The smiles on the faces of these children as we handed them a small gift, their certificates, a group picture, and a small children's Bible was priceless!

The Romanian workers - Claudiu, Sorina and Costica - all said today that this week turned out much better than they ever expected. We lost one worker when circumstances forced Emily to stay home, Justin had the problems with his bags, and we had no idea what to expect as far as a turnout. But, leaving things in God's Hands is always the right thing. It was certainly the answer this week.

A lot of things crossed my mind today. The fact that we have planted seeds that others will water - 1 Cor. 3 - came to mind. I also thought of those who have worked in Cluj before us. Dan, Jan, Phil, and Rebecca: I thought of you often this week. One young man, Darius, whose family worshipped here in the past but is no longer faithful, attended every service this week along with his younger brother. We gave each child a group picture that was taken on Wednesday. Darius left and came running back into the building a few minutes later. He handed me his copy of the picture and said, "My brother and I have one picture. Please send this one to Mr. Dan and Ms. Jan." I hope that the Davis and Jackson families know how much they are appreciated!

As our work here draws to a close, we look forward to a day off tomorrow for the trip to Sighisoara. Sorina and Costica will leave us and return home. That's always a sad and bittersweet thing. We wish them well and appreciate their hard work so, so much.

Well, the Cubs just wrapped and 8-3 win, so it's bedtime. "Go Cubs Go" is playing in my head and that's the perfect way to go to sleep!

Thursday Evening - 23 Jul 2009

Hello from Cluj! Our week here is flying by. It seems that we just got started with the Bible School and we are just a few hours away from starting our last day. It has been a joy!

We had 27 in attendance today, not including the teachers. I've included a few pictures of the classes, puppet show, and 37 cheeseburgers neatly packed in two large sacks. You should have seen the look on the clerks face at McDonalds when we placed an order for 37 cheeseburgers and 37 medium fries! It was priceless. Then she asked, "Would you like that here or to go?" Costica was with me and he might weigh 125 pounds soaking wet, so I guess she thought this big American was going to have a party with 30+ burgers!

We had the regularly scheduled mid-week prayer service tonight instead of Wednesday. Justin provided an overview of the book of Titus and did a fantastic job. We also had a Bible study with a lady named Carmen. She is a co-worker of Paul, one of the Christians at Cluj. She has much to learn. Please join us in prayer that she will continue to study with Claudiu, Paul and others.

Our plans are to finish the VBS in the morning with classes, lunch, and a graduation ceremony. We then have another study with Carmen tomorrow afternoon and our work will be finished. Friday evening we will enjoy a meal with some of the Christians.

Saturday is our day off and we plan to travel to the ancient city of Sighisoara. It's claim to fame is being the birthplace of ol' Vlad Tepes. He is also known as Vlad Dracul, Vlad the Impaler, and Dracula. The city is in a beautiful area of Romania and hosts an annual festival during this week. We will travel there to meet Dragos Vintilla, Sorina's husband, and he will take Sorina and Costica back home to Pitesti. We'll enjoy some time at the festival before returning to Cluj. We're excited about seeing Sighisoara!

I will close for the evening. I'd like to close by wishing some special people a happy birthday and anniversary. My father-in-law, Alvin Bradford, celebrated a birthday on Wednesday. Happy birthday, Papa! My parents will celebrate their wedding anniversary tomorrow! Happy 51st, Pop and Mam!

Our numbers continue to climb! There were 27 children present today. The older class, taught by Justin and Claudiu, had 10 and the younger age group, taught by Sorina and Anca, had 17.

With a growing number comes the challenge of handling the needs of so many children. There are 7 adults from the church in Cluj, counting Justin and myself. We're very thankful for the two older sisters and one grandmother who have been willing to stay each day and give us a hand. The two sisters have 8 siblings, give of whom have been with us every day. I've uploaded a group photo and pictures of both the classes with their teachers.

I believe the kids are gaining a great deal from the lessons and I know that they are thoroughly enjoying the activities planned by the adult workers. The theme for the lessons this week is the Fruits of the Spirit. On Monday they studied the life of Christ (Peace, Love, and Joy). Yesterday the students learned the story of Ruth and Naomi was used to illustrate Kindness and Job used to teach them about Patience.

A tired group of workers are spending the afternoon resting. At 6:00 p.m. Justin and I have a Bible study with a friend of one of the Christians here in Cluj. Following that study, we will have the last of our three-part study on the Beauty of Christianity at 7:00 p.m.

We are all doing well. A big news flash: Justin's well-traveled bags finally arrived in Cluj last night. We went to the airport to pick them up at about 9:00 p.m. They were only 72 hours late! But, we're thankful that Justin has his belongings with him, finally.

Tuesday Evening - 21 Jul 2009

I typically don't post updates to the blog more than once a day, but I received some news from home late today that I wanted to share and ask for your prayers on behalf of some dear family members.

My mother's sister, Shirley Throgmorton, lost her husband last September. Their oldest daughter, Sherry, was diagnosed with a grave case of lung cancer yesterday. Sherry has experienced numerous health problems over the past several years and the prognosis for this new situation is not good at all.

My Aunt Shirley has two sons who are younger than Sherry. After receiving the news that his sister has what is likely a terminal case of lung cancer the older of the two boys, my cousin Toby, took his own life.

Needless to say, all of my mother's family is just devestated. Toby and I were very close in age. We're just heartbroken for the Throgmorton family. Toby was one of the gentlest souls I've ever known and reminded me so much of my maternal grandfather. I just cannot believe that he is no longer with us.

Toby was an organ donor and asked to be cremated. The family is also honoring his wish that no funeral be conducted. Dad and Mom will be with the family later this week as they observe a family memorial service during which Toby's remains will be interred at the graves of his father, our grandmother, and our Uncle Pete. Please keep this family in your prayers as they deal with so much.

Tuesday Afternoon - 21 Jul 2009

The laughter of children is a special thing. It is especailly joyful to hear it ringing through the church building in Cluj-Napoca. We were blessed with 23 children this morning - 15 in the younger age group and 8 in the older group. There was plenty of laughter and excitement to go around!

In case I haven't yet mentioned it, we are so grateful for those who are providing this opportunity. This Bible school would not be happening without the financial assistance of Christians from the States. The teachers are doing a tremendous job of preparing and presenting lessons that are both informative and fun. I'm deeply grateful for all of them: Claudiu and Anca Murtaza, Sorina Vintilla, Costica Dumitru, and Justin Taylor. The Christians in Cluj have been gracious hosts and we thank Paul Ionav for helping us in many ways today. Paul has such a servants heart.

I presented a lesson on Monday evening entitled "The Beauty of a Relationship with God." I wish that more had been in attendance, but we were thankful that two of the students who have been participating in English courses over the past six weeks were able to stay for the seminar, along with members of the church from Cluj. I hope that more will be present this evening for the lesson "The Beauty of Heaven."

Good news! Justin was able to locate his bags! They have made their way from Ghana in West Africa, back to the U.S., and they are now in Bucharest awaiting delivery to Cluj. They are in Bucharest and should be delivered to Cluj at 6:30 this evening. Pray that they finally make it to him!

Again, we're appreciative of those of you who made this work possible. Pray for God's help as we make an impression on these young minds and reach out to the adults of this city.

Monday Afternoon - 20 Jul 2009

Greetings from Cluj-Napoca where we had very exciting morning! A total of 21 children were present for our first day of Vacation Bible School. We didn't really know what to expect, although we were confident that about 20 children would show up.

Sorina and Anca taught a group of 14 children ages 6-9. An older sister of some of the children and the grandmother of two little boys both helped in taking care of things with the younger age group. Claudiu and Justin taught a total of 7 childern ages 10-14. Costica and I handled logistics, ran errands, and prepared and served lunch.

Overall, it was a REAL BLESSING to be a part of this day. Pleease keep those prayers going up! I've included a few photos from last night's planning session and the first day of classes the morning.

We will begin a three-night series of lessons tonight at 7:00 p.m. We're prayerful that some fo the parents of these children will come back tonight for a period of sutdy.

Greetings from Cluj-Napoca! A group of five of us arrived here about two hours ago to join Justin. Joining me on the journey were Claudiu and Anca Murtaza, Sorina Vintilla, and Costica Dumitru. Sorina and Costica are from Pitesti and Claudiu and Anca were there to celebrate the wedding. As I mentioned in my earlier blog post, the wedding of Marius and Bianca Motreanu was held at the Pitesti church on Saturday evening.

It was a beautiful ceremony attended by about 75 friends and family. A wedding reception was held on Saturday night. For those of you reading this from other parts of the world, it is hard to describe a Romanian wedding reception. They are complex affairs with four-course meals served late into the night and early into the morning. The Motreanu reception lasted until about 4:00 a.m. on Sunday - so I am told. I gave up after about two hours and returned to my room.

I have spent many a restless night in a Romanian hotel listening to a wedding reception downstairs. It felt good to know that I was paying someone back and keeping the other fellow up last night! There may be some pictures floating around on the Internet of an American preacher being taught a Romanian folk dance. Let's just say that no one will mistake me for a native Romanian!

It was a beautiful evening and certainly a joyous occasion to watch two Christians commit their lives together before God. I continue to pray that more Romanian Christians will marry. I have firmly believed for years that the growth of the church in Romania depends on that very thing.

We left Pitesti at 7:00 a.m. (Romania time) and stopped to worship with the church in Sibiu. A group from Ovilla, Texas was worshipping there also. They have just concluded a week-long VBS. What a thrill to meet fellow short-term workers from the States!

The group of workers will meet this afternoon to plan our week. We're so excited about the possibilities of the week! Please pray that we are able to find open hearts.

I cannot close without sharing the further travel travails of Justin. As I mentioned yesterday, his wife Emily was not able to travel with him due to an illness with their little boy. Justin arrived on Saturday, as scheduled, but without luggage. His bags were nowhere to be found! After I arrived in Cluj, we were able to make a phone call and he was notified that his luggage was found...in Ghana, West Africa!!! Hopefully, it will arrive here in Cluj on Tuesday. If I didn't know better, I would think that Justin had been infected with the Bob Swain Travel Virus, a rare but troublesome disorder that is probably afflicting Bob's fellow travelers in Costa Rica right now.

Greetings from beautiful downtown Pitesti, Romania! I arrived safely on July 16, the 12th anniversary of my very first trip to Romania in 1997. More importantly, July 16 is the wedding anniversary for my daughter and son-in-law, Brittany and Daniel Harless, and I want to wish them a happy 4th anniversary!

Things in Romania have changed a great deal since 1997. When I first came here many of the most basic services were lacking. We rarely had hot water in the hotel; phone service was not reliable; and the thought of the Internet and e-mail access was just…well, it seemed like a billion miles away. Yet, here I am posting to this blog using wireless Internet in front of the McDonalds in the city center about 100 yards from the hotel where I stayed in 1997! I am amazed at how far technology has come and how far Romania has come in so short a time.

Some of you may be wondering why I am writing from Pitesti instead of Cluj. As you may recall, I worked in the cities of Pitesti and Craiova from 1997 until 2006 when we began leading the work in Cluj-Napoca. While I was here in May a young couple asked if I would officiate at their marriage ceremony on July 18. They are both Christians – Marius a native of Pitesti and Bianca a native of Cluj. I am honored that they asked me to play a small part in their special day. So, I arrived in Pitesti last evening and appreciate the hospitality of the church here in allowing me to stay in the building. The ceremony is Saturday evening.

We will stay here in Pitesti until early Sunday morning. In order to arrive in Cluj as early as possible, we will leave Pitesti at around 7:00 Sunday morning and stop to worship with the brethren in Sibiu, a city about halfway to Cluj. Once we arrive there we will finish planning for the week.

There is a busy 9 days of work ahead of us in Cluj! Claudiu reports that we have about 25 children enrolled in the Bible school. This is such an exciting thing for the church there! It has been some time since they have been able to have a VBS. We’re thankful that God has opened this door. The theme for the lessons will be “The Fruits of the Spirit” and we’re very excited about the week.

I will also deliver a three-part series of lessons on Monday through Wednesday evening. The church in Cluj has about 30 English students who have been coming for lessons since early May. We hope that some of them will join us for the lesson series.

We received some disappointing news on Friday. Cooper Taylor, the 20 month old son of Justin and Emily, fell ill Thursday evening late, so Emily has decided to stay at home to care for him. We know that her primary job right now is “Mom” and so we’re thankful that she will be there to care for him. At the same time, we are disappointed for her. Emily has such a heart for evangelism and teaching and was so looking forward to the trip to Cluj. I know that she wishes the circumstances were different. Please pray for a speed recovery for little Cooper. Also remember Cooper’s Dad as Justin left the States on Friday. He will travel directly to Cluj and teach the Bible class and preach there on Sunday morning. Pray that his travels are safe and efficient.

This will be the only blog post until I arrive in Cluj. Please keep these works in your prayers that something may be done to plant the seed of the Gospel.

Prayer Request for Upcoming Work

Later this week, three Christians from the U.S. will travel to Cluj-Napoca and join Romanian Christians in preparing for work next week. I will leave the States on Wednesday morning and Justin and Emily Taylor of the Levy congregation in North Little Rock will follow me on Friday. While we appreciate your prayers for safe, efficient travel and good health that is not the purpose in my sending this prayer request.

While in Cluj we will conduct two events: a Bible school for children ages 6 to 14 and nightly services with an evangelistic focus. We need your prayers on behalf of both of these events.

Pray that God will help us in finding young students who are able to come each day throughout next week (Monday, July 20 through Friday, July 24) to begin learning about the God, the Bible, and a Risen Savior.

Pray that God will help us to find teens and adults who have hearts open to the Gospel as we conduct the nightly seminars next week (Monday, July 20 through Wednesday, July 22).

Ask for God’s help in finding students who are eager to study the Bible and better understand the Father’s will for their lives.

Final Thoughts - 9 May 2009

I'm happy to report that all three of the American workers for our recent efforts in Cluj made it home safely and without problems. The other two brothers brought home a good old-fashioned cold, but other than that we are all fine. It was a real joy to see our families on Tuesday evening! All three of us are thankful for our wives and families. They are so generous in allowing us to do this work and be away from them. God has truly blessed us in that respect.

The past two weeks in Cluj have been a real inspiration! I am amazed at how God works in the lives of people and within His church! We rejoice in the fact that the family in Cluj has grown by three in recent weeks. The spirit that these three bring to the church in Cluj is a blessing indeed.

I would be remiss if I didn't mention those brothers and sisters in Cluj who have continued to be so faithful through the years. Some of them have been Christians for many years and their dedication, through good times and bad, is an inspiration.

Please pray for the church in Cluj-Napoca, asking God to bless their efforts in reaching out to the people in that city. While we were there we had the opportunity to meet over 50 people who have enrolled in English courses being offered by the church. These courses, offered by World English Institute, are taught using the Bible as text. Inevitably, some are led to the a deeper interest in things spiritual through the material. Pray that the Word will find fertile soil in the hearts of these students.

Pray for Claudiu and Anca as they continue their work with the church there. They have grown so much in Christ and I am thankful that they have each other. What a team! Also remember Anca in your prayers as she continues to deal with the loss of her mother, Violeta Fekete. Sister Violeta was a faithful Christian who was a member of the church in Sibiu. The American missionary in Sibiu, Lee Skelton, tells me that the church in Sibiu is still reeling from her death. She was such a true, humble servant to the church in Sibiu and they miss her terribly.

Pray for our new brother, Paul Ionav, as he grows in Christ. For years I have prayed that God would bless the church in Romania with brothers and sisters who were gifted in music so that they could write and compose spiritual songs in their native tongue. There are now THREE Christians in Cluj who are professional vocalists and the wife of one of them teaches music. God works in mysterious ways! Two of the three sing with the philharmonic orchestra in Cluj and another sings in the opera company at the National Theater in Cluj. Wow! Think of the possibilities!

There is a renewed and refreshed spirit within the church in Cluj. We all know that Satan will use all at his disposal to destroy that spirit. Pray that God will protect them and guide them.

Thanks to so many of you who supported us financially, through prayer, and by your words of encouragement. We are thankful that God was able to use us in His work.

Safe At Home - 5 May 2009

I did not do any blog updates during our return home because the itinerary was a bit different than usual. We left Cluj at about 3:30 (AM!) on Monday morning and traveled as far as Rome. After overnighting there, we came on home yesterday.

The Arkansas portion of the team arrived safely and uneventfully in Little Rock at about 8:00 p.m. I pray and trust that Al made it home safely, as well.

A New Brother - 2 May 2009

After we returned home from the retreat on Saturday, Paul Iovan was baptized into Christ. I will post another blog later on Sunday with more of Paul's story, but I wanted you to know that we have a new brother! We were also able to use, for the first time, the new baptistery in Cluj. A brother from the States generously donated funds to accommodate the purchase of the baptistery and we were thrilled to be able to break it in.

Down From The Hills - 2 May 2009

The title of this entry was borrowed from a much more famous Arkansas native who, after being born and raised in the Ozark Mountains, became our governor in the late 1950's and served a record 6 terms. But, the thought is certainly appropriate for a group of 38 of us who gathered in Somesul Rece for a period of retreat and renewal. What a fantastic weekend!

The site for this event is very familiar to the Romanian Christians. It has been used for years as the site for the summer camp and so many of them have fond memories of being there as teenagers. The tiny little village is nestled in the heart of the mountains just outside Cluj. I will post some pictures in another blog entry, but suffice to say that it is difficult to find the proper words to describe the beauty of this setting.

The first thing we noticed after stepping from the van was the smell of burning maple coming from the chimney and the crispness of the cool air. The rustic buildings within the compound are beautiful and fit the surroundings as if God had put them there. A small river, the primary contributory to the Somes River that flows through Cluj, runs behind the camp. The ice-cold water reminded me of the Spring River in northern Arkansas near where my maternal grandfather was born.

The only thing more beautiful than the surroundings was the fellowship that existed among the Christians who were gathered there. Claudiu, Ted, and I had selected the theme "Living for Christ" and the lessons were aligned with that subject.

Al delivered a beautiful lesson entitled "The Benefits of Living for Christ" during the Thursday night worship period. Since we did have several attending from Cluj who are not yet Christians, I spoke on the subject "How Do I Begin Living for Christ?" on Friday morning. Vasile Iuhos, the Romanian preacher from the city of Oradea, spoke at mid-day on Friday on the topic "Living for Christ Through Fervent Prayer." Claudiu finished the day with the lesson "Living for Christ Through Holy Living."

Ady Lupascu, the Romanian preacher from Constanta, was scheduled to speak on the subject "Living for Christ Through Servanthood" on Saturday morning; however Ady fell ill with the flu on Wednesday and could not attend. We were fortunate that Lee Skelton, an American missionary working in the city of Sibiu, stepped in and did a fine job on short notice. Marius Motreanu, a Romanian Christian from Pitesti, provided our closing thoughts on Saturday.

On Friday afternoon the men and women separated for an hour of prayer. Curtis provided some thoughts prior to the men beginning our session. Sister Sorina Vintilla, a Christian from the city of Pitesti, led the ladies in a brief devotional prior to their prayer time.

Several of the Romanians led us in periods of beautiful singing throughout the weekend. Four sisters from the cities of Oradea and Bucharest provided some outstanding meals. Their tireless efforts were, without a doubt, the finest example of Christian service that we saw all weekend. Our deepest thanks go out to these fine ladies!

We closed Friday - and some brought in Saturday - with a BIG campfire. The cold night air, mixed with the voices of Christians praising God, was a memory that I will not soon forget.

Many old friendships were renewed and new relationships were forged and strengthened over the weekend. The purpose in hosting this event was two-fold. First and foremost, we had intentionally invited a number of people from Cluj who are considering becoming Christians. So, from that respect, this was an opportunity for evangelism. What better way to help them understand the benefits of becoming a Christian than by showing them firsthand the fellowship that we enjoy in Him! Second, we wanted to provide an opportunity for these brothers and sisters to be renewed. Many of them work in places where they have little direct support and encouragement. I'm sure that everyone reading this blog understands the importance of time away to charge the spiritual batteries. I hope that this weekend provided that opportunity for everyone involved.

I don't want to close without saying thanks to those of you back in the States who provide the opportunity for Al, Curtis and I to be here. Without you our participation this weekend would not have been possible! I know that God was praised for three straight days and we give all glory to HIM!

As I mentioned earlier, I will post a few pictures in another blog entry. I hope that you all enjoy a day of worship in whatever place you call home.

Off to the Mountains - 30 April 2009

Hello again from Cluj! I wasn't able to post a blog update yesterday (Wednesday), so this will have to count for two days. Yesterday closed with the mid-week Bible study following a very productive day. Al spoke at the service and it was joy to hear a fine lesson from him.

The real highlight of this trip is the Christian Retreat for Young Adults that begins today (Thursday). A number of Christians from across the country will begin arriving later today and we will make our way to the retreat center about 30 miles outside Cluj. The most exciting thing to me is the fact that we have several new Bible students (prospective brothers and sisters) from Cluj who will be attending!

A Fine Tuesday - 28 April 2009

Hello from Cluj-Napoca!

Tuesday was another beautiful day, filled with sunshine and opportunity. We enjoyed time today with several Bible students and another large group of newly-registered English students.

After we spent an hour with those registering for the English lessons, the team discussed the fact that some of those students may eventually be our brothers and sisters. How exciting it is to consider that possibility. Al and Curtis conducted the studies today and I am so very thankful for them!

I am also grateful for our brother, Claudiu Murtaza, and the work that he is doing in this city. His young wife, Anca, is a great support to him. The church here is a blessing to them and to us. What a joy it is to be a Christian!

Wednesday promises to be a very busy day. Al is scheduled to deliver the lesson at tomorrow evening's Bible study. A number of studies are scheduled, including some with new students. Two sisters will arrive from the Bucaharest church and begin preparations for the retreat that is to begin on Thursday. These two fine ladies will be preparing the meals for the 40-50 people who will be in attendance.

We're so grateful for your notes and e-mails. They really do keep us energized and focused.

Monday's In The Books - 27 April 2009

Late night greetings from Cluj! We're thankful for a very long and enjoyable day together. We spent a good part of the morning in prayer and discussion regarding the students here and the work that is being done by the church.

Many perceive that the only way to have a successful day on a short-term mission trip is to have high numbers of Bible studies. I have always embraced the theory that the type and quality of your studies is much more important than a number.

I also worry that Claudiu, the young preacher in Cluj, does not have as much personal, one-to-one support as Dad and I would like. So, it was a joy to interact with him and discuss the work here. It is a real treat to have Brother Jolly with us and especially so as he shared his nearly 50 years of experience with us and with Claudiu. What a treasure! And what a blessing to share with him!

For those of you who know Curtis, it comes as no surprise that he brings SO MUCH energy, excitement, and fun to whatever he is involved in. I appreciate him so much for taking time away from his precious family to be here with us.

We had a very busy late afternoon and evening with a number of studies. Several men gathered at about 5:00 and some time was spent in very challenging and thoughtful discussion. Some of these men are brethren and others are considering becoming Christians.

I'm thrilled to tell you that one of those students told us tonight that he wants to be baptized. He wanted to wait until arrangements could be made for his wife to be present. While I'm not excited about his decision to wait, I am thrilled with his spirit! He has been searching for the true church for quite some time and has visited many denominations. He asked to be baptized at several of these churches and was either told that he did not need to be baptized and in some cases they refused. Amazing as that sounds, he described being told to stand before a large group of people at one church in order for them to "vote" on whether or not to baptize him. Basically, he had to "make his case" before them. Apparently he wasn't convincing enough because they refused him. When I asked if he wished to be baptized his reply was, "Finally! Someone asks if I would like to be baptized!" Please remember Paul in your prayers.

I emphasized to him that I did not like for someone to wait, but that I would accept whatever decision he made. He said, "I finally find a church that will baptize me and I tell them to wait on me!" I made him aware that we were available to him at anytime of the day or night should he decide that it was time.

There were also 7 additional English students who came tonight. The church here is excited about these new prospects.

A Fine Sunday - 26 April 2009

Greetings once again from beautiful Cluj-Napoca! The church here enjoyed a fine Lord's day filled with worship, blue skies, and wonderful sunshine. Eighteen of us gathered for Bible class and worship this morning. The late afternoon was spent meeting with eleven new students who have enrolled in the intermediate English courses.

I'm thrilled to share the news that our wandering brother from Texas, Al Jolly, finally arrived in Cluj at 6:30 this evening. His flight out of Newark on Friday was delayed by 2 hours which resulted in his missing the connection in Rome by a mere ten minutes. He found assistance at the Rome airport and found lodging for the evening, then completed his journey today. I was so relieved to see him! And I know that his family back in Franklin were happy to hear that he had reached his destination. Now, on to the work.

Some of you may not be familiar with the materials offered by the World English Institute that we are using here in Cluj. The material, used for many years now, is very effective in teaching the student the English language AND it uses the Bible as the basis for the lessons. Many students are led to an interest in things spiritual while going through these lessons. It is not an exageration to say that there are thousands of Christians across the globe today who began their journey to Christ through this material. The approach has been used widely in Romania, even in Cluj during some of the early years (1996-2003).

Claudiu made arrangements for advertising about a month ago and we now have over FIFTY students who have enrolled. We will meet with two groups of beginner students on both Monday and Tuesday evenings this week. Please pray that these students will become open to the gospel in the coming days.

We also have several excellent prospects with whom we will study the Bible this week. At least one of them is very close to obeying the gospel. I ask that you pray for these students.

We will also make preparations for the retreat that will begin on Thursday and continue through Saturday.

The Incomplete Team Arrives - 25 April 2009

This update is delivered with mixed emotions. Curtis and I arrived in Cluj exactly as scheduled at 6:30 p.m. (Romania time) on Saturday. However, Al - the third member of the US portion of the team - did not meet us in Rome as planned. The plane left Rome about 20 minutes late and I was hoping against hope that the reason for the delay was Al and that as we were sitting at the gate, he would walk aboard. But, as it turned out, he had encountered problems with a connection in Newark and did not make the connection in Rome.

So, continue to pray for him as he makes his way here. We have heard from his wife, Mary, and he has made arrangements to come on to Cluj on Sunday and will overnight in Rome.

Curtis and I enjoyed a meal with Claudiu and Anca after arriving and settling in. It was good to catch up with them and talk about the work scheduled for the week. There are now over 50 students enrolled in the WEI courses that will start this week. The young adult retreat that will take place later in the week sounds SO exciting. It looks as if a good week is in store with the Lord's help.

For now, my tank is rather empty after about 34 hours without any sleep. I got absolutely no sleep on the flights, but I did see 4 good movies that I hadn't seen before! My body is telling me that it is time to stop. God bless you all and continue to pray for Al as he makes his way to Cluj.

Another Journey Set to Begin - April 23, 2009

Greetings from Vilonia, Arkansas!

Three U.S. workers will leave in just a few short hours, bound for Cluj-Napoca, Romania and our next Operation Outreach effort. I will be traveling with Curtis Sawrie of Mt. Vernon, Arkansas and we will meet up with Al Jolly of Franklin, Texas on Saturday in Rome. We will arrive in Cluj around 6:30 p.m. (local time) on Saturday evening and join the rest of our team.

We have a busy twelve days planned! The church in Cluj has recently began advertising for free English lessons in an effort to identify potential students. The church will be using materials prepared by World English Institute. We are THRILLED that nearly 50 students have registered. The team looks forward to meeting them on Sunday and Monday. We also anticipate a number of Bible studies with current students and Christians in Cluj.

On Thursday (4/30) we will leave for the retreat site in the Carpathian Mountains outside Cluj where we will join about 50 young adult Christians from across the country. This will be the second year that the church in Cluj has hosted this event, along with churches and families from the U.S. We cannot wait for three days of fellowship, worship, Bible study, and edification.

Please keep us in your prayers! Pray for the work that will be done, for safe and efficient travel, for good health, and (especially) for our families as we leave them behind.

A Journey Completed (August 5)

The weary U.S. portion of this Operation Outreach team arrived home at 8:00 (CT) on Tuesday evening. All were safe, sound, properly loaded down with luggage, and thankful to see our families.

Closing Thoughts (August 4)

The three of us arrived safely in Rome last evening and have enjoyed some much-needed rest and relaxation. We arrived at the Leonardo di Vinci Airport aboard an Alitalia flight from Bucharest. Having stopped in Rome many times, it was really confusing to me when we arrived at a different terminal. We began following the signs to the baggage claim area and found that our luggage was in a different terminal - the one which I am accustomed to seeing upon arriving from Bucharest. There was only one issue - we had not gone through passport control! We just walked right out into glorious Rome without so much as an official glance at our passports! We must have stopped 6 to 8 officials and all of them said, "No problem!" I suppose we will find out if they were right when we try to leave in the morning. Say a quick prayer for us about this issue!

I want to close out the weblog account of this trip with a few thoughts regarding the need for this type of work in Cluj and many other places.

Most of you who read this account are members of churches of Christ in the United States. You likely worship regularly in a building that was constructed some time ago. On average, your home congregation is 40-70 years old. You are probably part of the second, third, or fourth generation of Christians who have worshipped regularly at your respective church home. I'm reminded of this passage:

“When the Lord your God brings you into the land he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give you a land with large, flourishing cities you did not build, houses filled with all kinds of good things you did not provide, wells you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant—then when you eat and are satisfied, be careful that you do not forget the Lord, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.” - Deuteronomy 6:10-12

Those of you who are second, third, or fourth generation members of your respective congregations are taking advantage of "wells that you did not dig." You're living in a "house that you did not build." That's OK! I believe that is exactly what God planned.

But, realize this fact - Moses told the Israelites not to forget the Lord who brought them out of Egypt. Neither should we forget the Lord who blessed our forefathers in the U.S. with the blessings that resulted in our current home congregations.

You have brothers and sisters in other places who are currently digging their own wells with help from God. They are planting the vineyards from which their children and grandchildren will harvest spiritual fruit. Here is the important part that I want you to consider: the work that we did this week in Cluj and similar efforts that happen all over the world are HELPING THEM BUILD THESE CHURCHES!

This week we had the opportunity to work with a newlywed couple of three weeks. They are both faithful children of God. I pray that the efforts they are currently expending with the church in Cluj will bear fruit in Murtaza children and grandchildren who are faithful Christians. Another Christian home will be formed this coming Saturday (August 9) and I pray that the Vintilla home will be blessed as well. Yet a third Christian home - the Motreanu family - will become a reality in October. God be praised that these homes are being formed!

Prior to leaving the U.S., all three of us had people ask, "Why are you going to Romania?" Each of us were asked why we weren't focusing on the "home front." It's a common occurrence to be asked that question. By the way, I am CONFIDENT that all three of us ARE focusing on the home front.

However, we all three recognize that now, more than ever, the church in Cluj, the church in other parts of Romania, and the church all over the world needs the help of brothers and sisters. They need the support and encouragement that comes from spending time together. I suppose you could put it this way: THE "WELL-DIGGERS" NEED OUR HELP!

So, that is what we have done. We have spent time encouraging our brothers and sisters. We have taught a number of excellent prospects who have never heard the true Gospel of Christ. We have built new relationships. We have shown those who were skeptical of Christians that we are "regular people" and not a bunch of "weirdos." (An actual statement that was made to us!)

We have all three grown immeasurably over the past 10 days. We're better men for having spent this time together in Cluj with our Romanian brothers and sisters. And we give ALL the glory to GOD! He is an awesome God!

We will be back in the U.S. in a little more than 24 hours and we are very anxious to be there. It has been a fantastic opportunity for which we are grateful to a living and powerful God.

Saturday in Cluj (August 2)

We finished our studies this morning with a 2-hour lesson with Valer, a wonderful man whom we met at one of the seminar sessions this week. He is a sincere student of the Bible and is seriously considering the gospel. We're thankful for our time with him.

After we completed that study, Claudiu arranged for van to pick us up and take us for a 40-kilometer drive into the mountains outside Cluj. Justin and Curtis wanted to visit the camp location in the village of Somesul Rece. We also stopped in the town of Gilau and enjoyed some soft drinks at a resort on the lake. It was a fabulous way to end our daily work.

Curtis and Justin will deliver the Bible class lesson and sermon (respectively) tomorrow and we will leave shortly thereafter for the airport. Given our busy schedules tomorrow, this will be my last post to the blog from Romania. Our time here has been a genuine blessing to the three of us. We pray that it has been profitable for those to whom we have ministered this week. We're thankful for some many things: the opportunity to be here; those of you who have sacrificed to help us make this trip; to Claudiu and Anca for enabling our efforts; the brothers and sisters in Cluj who have been supportive; and to God for his goodness! We will arrive home (Little Rock) at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday evening. Until then...

We've had two very productive days here in Cluj, so much so that I did not get a chance to do an update last evening. We concluded the nightly seminars on Friday evening. We are thrilled to have made a number of new contacts as a result of these sessions. Of course, that met our primary objective of increasing the visibility of the church here in Cluj.

I am very encouraged by a student who came to the building on Friday afternoon. He is a very serious student of the Bible and has been searching for the "church of the New Testament" for some time. He and his wife recently moved into a house at #11 Ilie Macelaru Street - directly across the street from the church! He told the teachers that he walked out of his house today and noticed the banner that was hanging in the church courtyard advertising the daily Bible studies.

Claudiu has worked with teams of Bible teachers consistently since 2003. He has done literally hundreds, perhaps even thousands, of Bible studies. He told me this afternoon that this discussion was the most impressive Bible study he had ever participated in.

We also studied with a man whom we met at the Thursday night seminar and we're excited about his openness to God's word.

Following services tonight (Friday), a group of 6 Christians and 4 visitors enjoyed a meal together. Several of us then made our way to the local bowling alley for a very fun hour at the lanes. A great time was had by all!

So, as the work here winds down, we are thrilled at the opportunities that God has provided.

We've been blessed with good health, stunningly beautiful weather, and work to do in His service. Following scheduled studies in the morning we will enjoy a few hours of sightseeing around Cluj and, Lord willing, a good night's rest before worshipping with the church on Sunday.

Wednesday in Cluj (July 30)

Greetings from Cluj on a beautiful Wednesday evening! We have just concluded a productive day in the Lord's service. We were blessed with the opportunity to conduct a number of Bible studies, several of which were with repeat students. I am confident that at least two of these students will eventually obey the Gospel, but we are being thorough in our studies with them in order to ensure that they understand the commitment that they are making. Pray for Rebecca and Viorel as we continue teaching them.

Our nightly services at the House of Culture began this evening and we are thrilled to have made contact with 5 or 6 new individuals. We are hopeful that they will continue to attend on Thursday and Friday evenings and perhaps join us for studies during the day.

Before I close I want to share this story. We were in the middle of study today and the student had asked that we look at Matthew 25:34-36. The student was asking how and when the Christian should help others. As he was asking the question - and I mean at the exact moment - we saw a lady walk by the window and enter the church building. She proceeded to tell Claudiu that she was having eye surgery and needed financial assistance. Based on her appearance, I'm not sure if the surgery was legitimate or perhaps she just needed some money to survive. Over the years we have been put in similar situations many, many times. Not wanting to interrupt the study, I pulled out the equivalent of about $15 and gave it to her. As I turned around, the student was smiling and told me (through the translator), "That is what I was talking about. The Christian must help others!" It did not dawn on me until that instant that we had put into practice the words of Jesus in Matthew 25. At the same time, we provided the student with a living example. Doesn't God work in mysterious ways?!

Tuesday in Cluj (July 29)

Greetings from Cluj at the close of a fine Tuesday! We had a number of good studies today and part of the team was able to close the day by enjoying a meal in the home of one of our sisters in Cluj.

In spite of the fact that I have made 16 previous trips to Romania, I still experience new things. One of the more sobering of those new events happened to me today. We were studying with a young man of 30 years named Viorel. He is homeless, surviving as best he can living in what we would call a storage shed. Viorel works day jobs as he can find them. This being our first study with him we invested some time getting to know him and understanding his spiritual condition and level of Bible knowledge. He had several passages of Scripture that he wanted to read and one of them was James 2:1-9. It was heart-wrenching to have someone who lives on the street read words such as those to you. He will return for further study tomorrow.

Curtis continued studies with Rebecca and began discussions with a young man, Colin, a returning student. He has family members who are Christians, but they have been unfaithful for some time. He has been attending services recently and we pray that he will come to a greater understanding of the Gospel this week.

Our sister, Klara, provided us with a wonderful pasta dinner to close the day. She invited two of her colleagues (co-workers) to join us for dinner and we're grateful that she did so. We hope to visit with her friends, Marius and Benjamin, at the nightly services later this week. We are very grateful for her hospitality!

We begin the nightly services tomorrow night at the House of Culture for Students. For those who aren't familiar with that term, the House of Culture is a typical city auditorium and gathering-place in Romania cities. This particular HOC is located near the city center and several of the 12 or so universities located in Cluj. We have chosen the topic "Improving Your Family Life" and we hope to make a number of new contacts during these sessions. Please pray that our efforts in this respect will be fruitful, according to His will.

I want to close by offering a special word of thanks to a special lady. My good wife, Lisa, has been so patient and supportive of my work in Romania over the years. She has joined me here for one campaign, but has spent most of the past 10 years sending me away while she stayed home and cared for my kids. Tomorrow - July 30 - is her birthday and for the third time I will be in Romania as she celebrates her birthday. She has never once made me feel guilty when things like this occur, but I want to thank her for patient understanding of this work. Happy Birthday, Babe! I love you!

Monday in Cluj (July 28)

We've closed out a good day here in Cluj. The studies were slow, but we were able to make some new contacts from the advertising that has been done. The morning was spent distributing nearly 1,000 flyers that had been printed. Some much-needed general maintenance and cleanup around the building was also done. It was also a pleasure to spend a few hours visiting with Maggie, a young Christian from Oradea who will be moving to Cluj in October to begin her university studies. It was a real pleasure getting to know her and we look forward to seeing her more in the fall. Oradea's loss will certainly be Cluj's gain!

Justin, Curtis, and Anca were able to spend some time studying with a young lady who has recently begun attending worship services in Cluj. I don't want to betray her trust, so I will not provide details of her situation, but please remember her in your prayers. She is facing some extremely difficult situations in her family life which jeopardize her mental and physical well-being. I continued to be amazed at how badly people are capable of treating one another, especially a beautiful 16-year-old girl. Pray for Rebecca.

I haven't mentioned much about the general state of affairs here in Romania. Things continue to be very challenging financially for the general population. Incomes are very limited compared to those in other countries. For those of you in the U.S. who are distressed over fuel prices, the average price for a liter of gas in Cluj is 4.13 Romanian New Lei. That converts to $6.78 in US Dollars! Imagine paying that kind of price for gasoline on a salary several times less than that of the average U.S. worker. Most people here continue to work hard to make a better life, but it is very hard.

Sunday in Cluj (July 27)

Greetings from cool Cluj! We have enjoyed a great Lord's Day here in Romania. We spent the day in worship to God with our brothers and sisters in Cluj. Following service we helped to of the members here in Cluj celebrate recent birthdays. I've included photos of Robert Szatmari and Isabelle Bodi.

Justin spoke during the Bible class hour and did a fantastic job. Curtis delivered the lesson during worship and delivered a fine sermon. I am deeply grateful to these two men for their dedication in being here.

We have a few studies scheduled for tomorrow, but not as many as we would like. Please join us in prayer that the advertising being done will be effective in bringing students to God's word. We're only here as messengers and we understand fully that it is not our place to give the increase.

I mentioned the weather earlier and it has been SPECTACULAR! The high today was around 80 and the low overnight was in the high 50's. For those of us from the southern U.S. it seems very strange to see people in jackets in July, but that is the case. We hope it stays that way for 8 another week!

As many of you are aware, the young preacher here in Cluj, Claudiu Murtaza, recently married a fine Christian young lady from Sibiu, Anca Dinu. They have only been back "at home" in Cluj for a week and it is a thrill to see them so happy. Some of you have heard me say that I believe that the future of the church in Romania will be much brighter when we see Christian homes being formed. In addition to Claudiu and Anca, there are two other couples who will be married between now and the end of October. Please keep all of them in your prayers as they begin their lives together.

Again, continue to pray that the Lord will send us students who need the good news of Jesus. We love you all very much!

In Cluj - Safe and Sound!

After a 30-plus-hour journey followed by dinner with Claudiu and Anca, I really need to climb in the bed, but not without first posting an update to let everyone know that we made it to Cluj safe and sound.

The trip was spectacularly uneventful. No delays, lost bags, or frustrations. The layovers were a bit lengthy, but well worth it to make sure that there were no problems.

We are all planning to get as much rest as possible and start our work in the morning by worshipping with the brethren in Cluj.

We'll get another post up tomorrow with more detail. Until then...

Wheels Up!

Only 3.5 hours remain until we go "wheels up" and start our journey to Cluj. The team is ready and we are anxious to see our spiritual family in Romania! We leave Little Rock at 9:21 (Central US Time) with hops in Atlanta, Rome, and Bucharest before finally arriving in Cluj-Napoca at 6:30 (Eastern European Time). That will be 10:30 in the morning for the folks back home in Arkansas. Only 28.5 hours from now! Piece o' cake!

Keep us in your prayers over the next day. I'll post a blog update on Saturday evening to, Lord willing, tell you that we've arrived safely.

Preparations Near Completion!

In 44 short hours, our team of three will leave Arkansas bound for Cluj-Napoca, Romania. In addition to myself, the group includes Justin Taylor of North Little Rock, Arkansas and Curtis Sawrie of Mt. Vernon, Arkansas.

The three of us spent some time together this past Saturday discussing the work that we will be doing in Cluj. The excitement is really building! The church in Cluj is preparing for a busy week and we are grateful for their efforts. Claudiu Murtaza, the Romanian brother who leads the work in Cluj, informs me that the advance work - advertising and such - is well underway. We're praying that God will bless these efforts in accordance with His will.

I want to pass along heartfelt congratulations to Claudiu and his new bride, Anca. They were married in his hometown of Craiova, Romania on Saturday, July 12. They are making their home in Cluj where Claudiu will continue his work with the church.

Justin will be making his second trip to Romania. He and his wife, Emily, served as part of an Operation Outreach team in Moreni, Romania during the summer of 2006. They have since welcomed a baby boy, Cooper, into their home and Emily will be staying home to care for Cooper. Justin and Emily are members of the Levy congregation in North Little Rock where they worship with their parents. Justin's father, Nathan Taylor, serves as one of the elders at Levy.

Curtis will be making his first trip to Romania. His family - wife, Kimberly, and two young sons, Byron and Harmon - worship with the Mars Hill congregation near Vilonia, Arkansas.

I am deeply grateful for the dedication of these two men. I'm equally grateful to their wives for making a sacrifice in letting their husbands be a part of this work. I know, full well, how big a job it is for a mother to be left at home to care for children while the husband and father is away in the mission field. My own wife, Lisa, has done so nearly 20 times, beginning in 1997 when our girls were 11 and 7. For the second time in our 24 years together I will miss Lisa's birthday because of the mission field. I cannot thank her enough for her willingness to allow me to do this work. Thanks, ladies, for your part in our work!

Between now and our Friday morning departure, the Knight family will gather to help Dad and Mom celebrate 50 years of marriage! They were married on July 24, 1958 in their hometown of Bay, Arkansas. We are thrilled that God has blessed us with the opportunity to be a part of their family.

SPECIAL PRAYER SERVICE TONIGHT: You are all invited to join us at the Vilonia church for a period of prayer dedicated to this upcoming Operation Outreach work in Cluj. Services will begin at 7:00 p.m.
